On 1 November 2025, the financial advice landscape shifted with the introduction of the new Code of Professional Conduct for Financial Advice Services and an updated benchmark qualification – the New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5) v3.
If you’re already an adviser, you won’t need to complete the new qualification. However, the updated Code continues to expect you to maintain and develop your competence, knowledge, and skill – and that means understanding what’s changed.
The updates cover important areas including client engagement, conduct standards, legislation, and regulatory requirements. To meet the new Code’s expectations, it makes sense to check your knowledge against the new standard and identify any areas where you may need to “close the gaps”.
Closing the Gaps is a short, online course designed to help you bridge the knowledge difference between earlier Level 5 qualifications and v3. It doesn’t replace the qualification – it simply helps you confirm equivalence through structured, defendable learning that meets the Code’s expectations for ongoing competence.
Master the client engagement skills expected under the new Code, including effective communication techniques and relationship management.
Navigate the updated ethical standards and professional conduct requirements that apply to your practice.
Stay current with the specific changes to legislation, regulation, and the Code that impact how you deliver financial advice.
Each module is designed to be completed in approximately one hour and includes:
Closing the Gaps is designed for existing financial advisers who hold earlier versions of the Level 5 qualification or were an AFA just prior to the commencement of the new regime and want to meet their regulatory obligations relating to CPD.
The Code of Professional Conduct for Financial Advice Services 2025 took effect from 1 November 2025. The new minimum standard of competence, knowledge, and skill for someone who wants to become a financial adviser is the New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5) Version 3. Code standard 9 now requires financial advisers to continually develop their competence, knowledge, and skill for giving financial advice. A logical place to start is to bridge the gap between your current level 5 qualification and the version 3 of the qualification
Closing the Gaps is an online CPD course that provides a structured way to demonstrate you’ve done that.
Closing the Gaps is self-paced online learning. You work your way through three interactive modules which contain quick and easy to answer quiz embedded in each section of each module.
We find most people take up to 1.5 hours per module, but you can go as fast or slow as you like. We provide fantastic learner guides for each interactive module and you can read these as part of undertaking the module or keep them for reference. You have 3 months access from the date of purchase.
Yes. The course qualifies for 4.5 CPD hours, and Radar users will have their completion automatically logged. A CPD certificate is automatically available online once you successfully complete Closing the Gaps.
