NZCFS (Level 5) qualification – now Fees Free!

NZCFS (Level 5) qualification – now Fees Free!

NZCFS (Level 5) qualification – now Fees Free!

Starting in 2025, Strategi Institute is now offering the New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5) under the government’s updated Fees Free scheme. This provides an incredible opportunity for eligible students to gain this valuable qualification with their fees fully reimbursed by the government.

This is fantastic news not only for those wanting to enhance their careers but also for FAPs looking to train new advisers. You’ll pay your fees upfront, and if you pass, they’ll be refunded—making it a simple, cost-effective way to advance your career in financial services without the long-term financial burden.

Background: What’s changed in the Fees Free scheme?

Previously, the Fees Free scheme covered the first year of study for eligible students. Under the updated approach, it now applies to the final year instead. For shorter programmes like NZCFS (Level 5), which can be completed in under a year, it means you’re reimbursed in full as soon as you pass—keeping things simple and cost-effective. For longer programmes, the scheme now helps reduce debt at the end of study.

Who qualifies?

To be eligible for the Fees-Free programme in 2025, you’ll need to:

  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, holding that status for at least three years.
  • Meet the programme’s prior study or training requirements.
  • Not have previously used Fees Free funding (e.g., first-year Fees Free).
  • If you’ve already used first-year Fees Free funding, you won’t qualify for this final-year scheme.

How to apply for your Fees Free refund

Starting in 2026, you can apply for a refund through Inland Revenue’s myIR portal. Once approved, your refund will either reduce your student loan balance or be paid directly to you.

Additional support options

Student loans and allowances: New Zealand citizens and residents can also apply for student loans through StudyLink to help with tuition and course fees. Visit StudyLink for more details.
