New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Life, Disability, and Health Insurance) (Level 5)

Overview

The New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5) version 3 (NZCFS Level 5 v3) is the updated benchmark qualification for anyone who wants to provide regulated financial advice. The programme is made up of 2 components – the Core component and the Life, Disability and Health Insurance (LDHI) strand.

This qualification is ideal if you’re already working in the industry or planning to enter it. It’s also suitable if you want to move into specialist roles such as a life, disability, and health insurance adviser, technical specialist, adviser support or business development manager.

What You’ll Learn

The programme is made up of 2 components, with a total of 65 credits (650 learning hours).

Core component (35 credits)

  • 40668: Develop relationship and communicate with clients ethically and professionally in a financial services context (20 credits).
  • 40669: Apply knowledge of the financial market participants and systems to provide financial advice solutions (15 credits).

 

Life, Disability and Health Insurance strand (30 credits)

  • 40658: Apply knowledge of the regulatory framework, concepts, and approaches to provide life, disability, and health insurance (5 credits).
  • 40659: Analyse client information to develop recommendations for life, disability, and health insurance needs (20 credits).
  • 40661: Apply knowledge of administrative processes to provide life, disability, and health insurance services (5 credits).

You can complete this programme through a mode that suits your schedule, location, and learning preferences. Online, distance, virtual and in person classes are available (see below).

All learners get access to Radar (Strategi Institute’s online learning platform), academic support, and regularly scheduled support sessions.

 

Online

Online learning is ideal if you’re working in the financial services industry or want to study independently from anywhere. You’ll complete your learning and assessments through our online learning management system using a computer or tablet.

What’s included:

  • No requirement to attend live classes.
  • Access to online support via chat, phone, email, or weekly support sessions.

 

Distance

Distance learning gives you all the benefits of online learning, plus printed course materials delivered to you.

What’s included:

  • Printed copies of the Core and Life, Disability and Health Insurance manuals for studying offline or making written notes.
  • All learning materials provided online.
  • Flexibility to study at your own pace within the programme timeframe.
  • No requirement to attend live classes.
  • Access to online support via chat, phone, email, or weekly support sessions.

 

Virtual classroom

Virtual classroom learning combines online study with the structure of live facilitator-led classes. It is recommended particularly for learners new to the financial services industry. These sessions are delivered via Zoom and include breakout discussions and guided activities.

Virtual classes are scheduled at the beginning of each component (Core and Life, Disability and Health Insurance) as outlined below.

Typical virtual session formats (per component):

  • Core component:
    • 8 x 2 hour classes (typically scheduled on weekday evenings);
  • LDHI strand:
    • 8 x 2 hour classes (typically scheduled on weekday evenings);

 

What’s included:

  • Expert facilitator-led learning without travel.
  • Pre-session and post-session readings and activities.
  • Printed copies of the Core and Life, Disability and Health Insurance manuals for studying offline or making written notes.
  • All learning materials provided online.
  • Flexibility to study at your own pace within the programme timeframe.
  • Access to online support via chat, phone, email, or weekly support sessions.

 

Once the scheduled virtual sessions are completed, you’ll continue progressing through your assessments and submit them within the course duration. You’ll have access to all standard support options available to distance learners.

 

Classroom

Classroom learning provides face-to-face teaching with an expert facilitator and a group of peers. It is recommended particularly for learners new to the financial services industry. These sessions are held at set locations throughout the year.

Classroom sessions are offered at the start of each component (Core and Life, Disability and Health Insurance) as outlined below.

Typical classroom formats include:

  • Core component: 2 full days (8 hours e.g., 9am–5pm)
  • LDHI strand: 2 full days (8 hours e.g., 9am–5pm)

What’s included:

  • Intensive facilitator-led learning in a supportive, interactive environment.
  • Printed course materials provided at the workshop.
  • Pre- and post-workshop readings and activities.
  • Printed copies of the Core and Life, Disability and Health Insurance manuals for studying offline or making written notes.
  • All learning materials provided online.
  • Flexibility to study at your own pace within the programme timeframe.
  • Access to online support via chat, phone, email, or weekly support sessions.

 

Once the scheduled classes are completed, you’ll continue progressing through your assessments and submit them within the course duration. You’ll have access to all standard support options available to distance learners.

Graduates may be qualified to work in the following roles as an employee or in a self-employed capacity:

  • Life, disability, and health insurance adviser.
  • Technical specialist.
  • Adviser support.
  • Business development manager.

 

Graduate education pathways

Graduates may choose to study additional specialist strands to provide financial advice in other

areas such as residential property lending or investment. Alternatively, they could progress onto higher level qualifications in financial services.

Eligibility

All learners enrolling in a Strategi Institute course are classified as either domestic or international. We accept both.

 

Domestic learners:

To enrol as a domestic student, you must:

  • Be a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or eligible visa holder.
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Show English proficiency equivalent to one of the following:
    • NCEA Level 1 in English; or
    • IELTS (Academic) overall score of 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0, dated within two years of application; or
    • NZCEL Level 3 (General or Workplace); or
    • PTE Academic with an overall score of 42 and no communicative skills score below 36; or
    • Completion of a certificate programme at NZQA Level 4 or higher in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, or Canada; or
    • Another NZQA-recognised equivalent.

 

A special admission pathway is available on application if you don’t meet this requirement.

All documents must be submitted at least 7 days before your course start date so your enrolment can be processed on time.

 

International learners:

Strategi Institute is an approved provider for international students.

To enrol as an international student, you must:

  • Hold an eligible work visa for the duration of your programme
  • Where applicable, provide evidence of approval to study as required by New Zealand immigration regulations.
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Show English proficiency equivalent to one of the following:
    • NCEA Level 1 in English; or
    • IELTS (Academic) overall score of 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0, dated within two years of application; or
    • NZCEL Level 3 (General or Workplace); or
    • PTE Academic with an overall score of 42 and no communicative skills score below 36; or
    • Completion of a certificate programme at NZQA Level 4 or higher in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, or Canada; or
    • Another NZQA-recognised equivalent.

 

A special admission pathway is available on application if you don’t meet this requirement.

 

Other requirements:

  • Hold valid medical and travel insurance that meets New Zealand requirements.

 

We strongly recommend this, as ACC cover may not apply to you as an international learner.

All documents must be submitted at least 7 days before your course start date.

The student handbook sets out the terms and conditions of your enrolment, including but not limited to the entry criteria, enrolment period, IT requirements, learning contract, health and safety procedures, assessment, reassessment, assessment appeals, extensions, withdrawals, refunds, and complaints.

Complete your enrolment form

Click Start Application on the course page, choose your course, study method, and intake date, then enter your details. You can save and resume later if needed.

Provide supporting documents

We require certified photo ID (passport or driver’s licence) and may need documents to confirm eligibility, qualifications, and English proficiency.

Certification must be signed, dated in English, and less than six months old. See the Enrolment Checklist for details.

Make payment

Pay online by credit card or request an invoice. If using a discount code, select invoice and enter the code. All documents and payment must be received at least 7 days before your intake date.

Student loans

You may be able to pay your course fees through a Student Loan. Eligible domestic learners can have their tuition fees only covered through StudyLink .

Please note: course-related costs and living costs are not available for this programme, as it is only approved for the Student Loan (fees) component and not for a Student Allowance.

Government-funded fee discount

You may be eligible for a government-funded fee reduction if you’re studying a financial services qualification for the first time and meet the funding criteria. Final-year fees free

You may be eligible for a government-funded fee refund if you are a first-time tertiary learner and meet the Final-year fees free criteria. This applies to the course fees for the NZ Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5). Learners pay upfront or via a student loan and claim a refund through Inland Revenue’s myIR portal after successful completion.

Group discounts

Discounted fees may be negotiated (prior to enrolling) for organisations that commit to enrol 10 or more students with Strategi Institute in one calendar year. Please contact us for more information.

  • We can deliver bespoke training on your premises, offsite, or via Zoom. We can provide highly experienced facilitators or our train the trainer option is also available.  
  • We can build an equivalency programme to meet the outcomes of the New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5) version 2.
  • We can provide a tailored CPD offer via our online learning platform Radar.

Intake dates

An intake is the date your course begins, regardless of delivery mode.

Available course start dates vary depending on the delivery mode you choose.

  • Online learning and Distance learning:
    Students may start at any of the intakes listed on the table below.
  • Virtual classroom learning:
    This delivery mode has set intake dates. For 2026, these are:
    4 February, 6 May, 8 July, and 26 September.
  • Classroom learning:
    Start dates vary. Please Contact Strategi for current availability.

 

To secure your place in your chosen course, you must complete the enrolment process at least 7 days before your selected intake start date.

This includes:

  • Submitting a completed enrolment form.
  • Providing all required supporting documents (e.g., ID, proof of residency, academic records, English language evidence if applicable).
  • Paying your fees in full, unless alternative arrangements have been approved.
